Roger Chirurgi, M.D., FACEP, was appointed chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at NYMC in November 2025. Previously, he served as vice chair of emergency medicine. Dr. Chirurgi joined the faculty of NYMC and the clinical staff at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, a major clinical affiliate of NYMC, in 2007. He has led the NYMC-sponsored Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Metropolitan for the past 15 years. He is also the medical director of simulation at Metropolitan Hospital.
Dr. Chirurgi serves as house advisory dean for Steward House, emergency medicine specialty advisor, and faculty advisor to the student-led Emergency Medicine Interest Group.
Board-certified in emergency medicine, Dr. Chirurgi is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He is a past national recipient of the Conference of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine Teacher of the Year Award. He has also been recognized with numerous awards for excellence in teaching and mentoring at NYMC.
Dr. Chirurgi has contributed to the field of emergency medicine with publications in peer-reviewed academic journals. He has served in numerous national committee roles for the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine over the past 10 years, currently as a member of the Wellness and Resilience Committee. He was a board member of the Physician Affiliate Group of New York, the physician staffing company for Metropolitan, for 12 years, and has served on local committees and task forces for ALL NYC EM, New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, and the Institute for Medical Simulation and Advanced Learning.
