Medicine

The Department of Medicine is the largest clinical/research/educational section at New York Medical College (NYMC) and Westchester Medical Center (WMC), which share a campus in Valhalla, New York. The affiliated academic medical center enjoys a regional and national reputation for excellence and achievement in all three essential areas.

Departmental physicians provide compassionate and expert care for an acute care hospital with the highest case mix index (level of patient illness intensity) in the U.S. Physicians manage routine medical problems while providing highly specialized bedside treatment for complicated cases admitted from the emergency room or transferred from the southern Hudson Valley Region of New York—seven counties with a population density of three million.

Highly specialized care is available at multiple outpatient clinics and private practice facilities on and off campus. Ever ready to upgrade its facilities and services, the department was among the first on the East Coast to provide a 24-7 hospitalist service and Cardiac Diagnostic-Intervention Program.

Department of Medicine physicians participate in the teaching of all students at NYMC. The NYMC Internal Medicine Residency Program has been recognized for innovations in clinical training, and the NYMC fellowship programs have attained the highest possible accreditation status.

Research

The Department of Medicine continues to thrive in all of its basic science and clinical research programs that are grant-funded by the National Institutes of Health, other government agencies, scientific organizations, and industry. As a marker of research productivity, the department is the most published section at NYMC, and a leader among other academic departments in New York State.

The affiliation between NYMC and WMC enables physicians to be active in the basic sciences and in translational and clinical research. Department physicians and scientists collaborate with their basic science colleagues at the NYMC Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and with public health and allied medical colleagues at the NYMC School of Health Sciences and Practice. International reputations have been developed in research areas that include Lyme disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, hypertension, geriatrics, renal disease, and influenza. Fundamental discoveries continue to be made in the department’s renal and cancer institutes, and by clinician-scientists in the various divisions of the department.

The full-time faculty and trainees within the Westchester Medical Center Heart and Vascular Institute, often in collaboration with scientists from NYMC, are engaged in cutting-edge research investigating multiple aspects of cardiovascular disease.

The Department’s physicians also serve as research mentors for students, residents, and fellows. As a result, these trainees publish widely and have won various national research competitions. The Department office is also an editorial site for The American Journal of Medicine, The Year Book of Medicine, and Cardiology in Review, an affiliated journal of the American Heart Association.

Medical Student Education

Faculty in Medicine teach during the preclinical years as part of the foundational courses. During the Department’s Medicine Clerkship, third-year students spend six weeks immersed in the care of adult patients with varied diseases in both inpatient and outpatient primary care of medicine subspecialty settings. Through one-on-one instruction from physicians, students learn to establish therapeutic relationships with patients and their families from taking an admission history and assessing patients with common acute and chronic conditions to coordinating care among consulting services and discharge planning. Each week of the clerkship focuses on a subspecialty within internal medicine, including gastroenterology and infectious disease; pulmonology and nephrology; cardiology and rheumatology; endocrine, hematology/oncology, and allergy/immunology; and general internal medicine, dermatology, and neurology.

The Department also offers numerous electives for third- and fourth-year students, including cardiology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, nephrology, oncology, pulmonology, cardiac electrophysiology, endocrinology, genetics, geriatrics, palliative medicine, and rheumatology. An elective subinternship exposes fourth-year students to the unique experience of an internal medicine intern, including rounding on patients daily, presenting on team rounds, and performing procedures as appropriate.

Internal Medicine Residency and Fellowship Programs

The NYMC Internal Medicine Residency and Fellowship Programs are committed to providing outstanding resident and fellow training while fostering a supportive and collaborative environment with an emphasis on continuous improvement.

The Internal Medicine Residency Program is offered at several NYMC clinical-affiliated sites:

The Department of Medicine also offers fellowships in cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, gastroenterology, hematology and oncology, infectious diseases, pulmonary disease and critical care medicine, and nephrology at Metropolitan Hospital and St. Michael’s Medical Center.
