The Division of Rheumatology in the Department of Medicine cares for patients with a wide range of immune mediated and inflammatory diseases. The Division consists of three clinical rheumatologists and an immunologist. The rheumatologists care for patients with an array of disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, spondyloarthropathies, systemic lupus erythematosus, osteoarthritis, scleroderma/systemic sclerosis, inflammatory myositis, vasculitis, gout and difficult-to-diagnose musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders. The physicians are involved in direct patient care, training of residents and medical students, as well as research.
The Division offers an opportunity to design and conduct clinical research projects. Rheumatology fellows, medical residents, and medical students interested in the field have an opportunity to present their research projects at national and regional meetings, including the American College of Rheumatology annual meeting.
Medical Student Education
Third- and fourth-year medical students have the opportunity to gain a clinical overview of the field of rheumatology through an elective during which they will participate as part of the clinical care team. Medical students will see patients with a wide variety of arthritic and connective tissue diseases in outpatient office settings and inpatient rheumatology consultant care, participate in hospital rounds and clinical conferences, and will acquire an understanding of immunological testing in rheumatic diseases.
