Geriatrics

With more than 12 percent of the U.S. population now over the age of 65, the need is great for physicians who can care for this burgeoning elderly population. For more than 25 years, the Division of Geriatrics has played a key role in teaching the principles and practice of geriatric medicine to residents and medical students of New York Medical College. Additionally, geriatric faculty has contributed numerous papers and books related to aging and age-prevalent illnesses and have made presentations before national geriatric conferences and scientific meetings.
Medical Student Education
Fourth-year medical students can learn more about the field through a geriatrics elective where students will participate as members of an interdisciplinary patient care team to gain a better understanding of the diagnosis and management of common conditions that present in older adult patients, including hypertension and diabetes, dementia, delirium, urinary incontinence, dizziness, falls, pressure ulcers, and sensory impairment.
