The faculty of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine are specialists who provide a full array of pulmonary diagnostic procedures to enable a busy consultation service to evaluate patients with diagnostic and therapeutic pulmonary problems. The pulmonary function laboratory can perform the entire spectrum of lung function testing, including exercise and methacholine challenge.
An 11-bed medical intensive care unit is managed by full-time pulmonary/critical care intensivists, who direct the care of patients with complex conditions. A 20-bed respiratory stepdown unit manages ventilator weaning, noninvasive ventilation, and patients with multiorgan disease, including respiratory failure. Critical care services are also provided to patients admitted to the neurosciences ICU. A neurocritical care certified specialist from the division is an integral part of this team.
A sleep laboratory accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine performs sleep studies for adults and children for the assessment of sleep disorders. Faculty provide consultation services and continued care for patients with sleep-disordered breathing and other sleep problems.
Faculty actively participate in clinical research by collaborating with other divisions in the Department of Medicine, as well as other clinical and basic science departments at NYMC. Members of the Division are actively involved in teaching medical students during all four years of medical school.
Medical Student Education
Third-year medical students can choose to broaden their knowledge in pulmonary medicine during a two-week elective where special emphasis is placed on interpreting chest x-rays with clinical problems. During their fourth year, students have the option to learn about all aspects of pulmonary-critical care medicine, which includes attending weekly clinics where ambulatory pulmonary problems, including long-term follow-up of cases are seen.
