The Office of Academic Excellence, which includes the Division of Student Academic Support and the Division of Student Accommodations and Accessibility, at New York Medical College and Touro College of Dental Medicine empowers a diverse student population in an equitable transition to and the successful completion of graduate and medical studies. Our comprehensive services cultivate self-efficacy, resilience, and a culture of academic excellence, developing the next generation of researchers and health care leaders.

Division of Student Academic Support

The Division of Student Academic Support (DSAS) in the Office of Academic Excellence provides students at New York Medical College and Touro College of Dental Medicine with individualized guidance and coaching in study skills, time management, test taking strategies, and writing to foster achievement of students' academic and professional goals.

The DSAS is committed to supporting the academic success of all students. The volume and pace of the curriculum generally will require students to reflect on their study and personal habits, as well as their test-taking skills. Our goal is to work with course and program directors to identify struggling students as early as possible and provide resources for the purposes of course and exam preparation. DSAS staff members lead workshops on study strategies and are available to meet one-on-one with students who would like support in creating academic excellence plans.

The DSAS manages and administers a peer learning partners program (tutoring) for various courses. The DSAS also offers support for all stages of the writing process; strategies for non-native English speakers; and individual guidance (in-person and electronically) on resumes, cover letters, personal statements, class assignments, presentations, theses, dissertations, and more. DSAS is not involved in career advising and encourages students to seek program-specific career advice within their respective programs. All students need assistance at some point in their academic career; there are many staff and faculty available at NYMC to offer support.

Division of Student Accommodations and Accessibility

The Division of Student Accommodations and Accessibility supports students in navigating barriers and provide reasonable accommodations through an individual interactive process to ensure all students have equitable access to achieve academic excellence.

NYMC prohibits discrimination against any individual on the basis of physical or mental disability. It is also the policy of the College to provide reasonable accommodations, as required by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the American Disabilities Act (ADA), and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (the "ADAAA"), to qualified students, with a diagnosed and documented disability, who have identified themselves to the College in a timely manner, as individuals with a disability so that such qualified students will be capable of completing the full curriculum of required courses and electives under College policies and in accordance with applicable technical standards for admissions and enrollment. Such reasonable accommodations shall be provided on an individualized basis and shall serve to alleviate an impairment created by a functional limitation unless such accommodations would impose an undue burden or fundamentally change the essential educational environment of the program involved or adversely affect the safety and welfare of other students, faculty or patients. Furthermore, it is the policy of the College to require qualified students with disabilities to meet the same academic standards as students with disabilities.

To be eligible for accommodations, a student must have a documented disability as defined by the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. A reasonable accommodation is a modification or adjustment to an instructional activity, facility, program or service that enables a qualified student with a disability to have an equal opportunity. In order to respect your privacy and ensure a thoughtful interactive process, please contact the Disability Designee(s) to make an appointment.
