Otolaryngology (also called otolaryngology-head and neck surgery) is a surgical subspecialty within medicine that deals with conditions of the ear, nose, and throat (ENT), head, and neck. Otorhinolaryngologists treat all diseases of the head, neck, and base of skull, as well as surgically manage cancers and benign tumors of the head and neck, including infants, children, and adults.
Faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology at New York Medical College include specialists who have received fellowship training in the full breadth of otolaryngology, including pediatric otolaryngology, head and neck oncologic surgery, thyroid and parathryroid surgery, sinus and skull base surgery, neurotology/otology (hearing and balance disorders), laryngology (voice and swallowing disorders), sleep surgery and facial plastic and microvascular reconstructive surgery and are all board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.
Most of the faculty are based at Westchester Medical Center (WMC) and Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, a Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, a major academic affiliate of NYMC. The operating rooms, interventional suites, and intensive care units feature the latest and most innovative technologies, and the clinicians and faculty are nationally and internationally thought leaders.
Research
Department Faculty are engaged in basic science, clinical, and translational research and have published extensively in the field.
Summer Medical Student Otolaryngology Research Program
The Summer Medical Student Otolaryngology Research Program is an annual opportunity, from May to July, for NYMC students between the first and second years of medical school, which offers an experience for students to participate in clinical research, receive otolaryngology and communication science didactics, an introduction to research methodology, and observe otolaryngologic procedures in the clinic and OR. Applications open in the first quarter of the year.
Medical Student Education
Electives in both the third and fourth years of medical school provide opportunities for medical students to learn more about a career in otolaryngology. Students participate in scheduled conferences, clinics, and teaching rounds to learn how to evaluate and treat patients with a wide range of conditions generally seen by otolaryngologists.
3rd Year Rotations: The Department of Otolaryngology offers a two-week selective rotation to 3rd year New York Medical College Students. Students rotate both in the office and in the hospital and operating rooms.
4th Year Rotations: A four-week sub-internship is offered from May through October for NYMC medical students and visiting students. This is to provide students the opportunity to gain experience in the evaluation and treatment of general and subspecialty otolaryngology in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Students are expected to be actively involved in rounds, inpatient consultations, and surgical cases. At the end of the rotation, medical students are expected to give a 30-minute presentation on a topic of their choice to the residents, physician assistants, and attending staff.
