Faculty appointments and promotions process is handled by either the SOM Office of Faculty Affairs for School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, or SHSP Office of the Dean for faculty appointments within the School of Health Sciences and Practice.
SOM/GSBMS Faculty
The Tenure, Appointments and Promotions (TAP) Committee is a committee of School of Medicine faculty and is charged with ensuring that scholarly achievement and excellence are the criteria for academic advancement, independent of whether a faculty member's achievements derive primarily from clinical, teaching, research or administrative contributions to the department, institution and medical and scientific communities. Selection of individuals for appointment and promotion to the SOM and/or GSBMS faculty and awarding of tenure must be in accordance with the highest standards. More information on the SOM/GSBMS tenure, appointments and promotions process, please visit the SOM Office of Faculty Affairs section on Faculty Appointment or Promotion.
SHSP Faculty
In SHSP, adjunct/part-time faculty hires are initiated by the department/division forwarding a memo indicating the intent to hire the candidate along with the candidate’s CV and completed faculty data form to the Dean’s Office for processing. The Dean’s Office shares the package with the Committee for Appointments and Promotion (CAP) for review and an approval/disapproval vote. CAP notifies the Dean’s Office of its determination. If approved, the package is forwarded to the Dean for approval. If the Dean approves, a memo is produced making a recommendation for the hire to the Chancellor. Upon making a determination, the Chancellor informs the Dean’s Office of his decision. If the Chancellor approves then the Dean’s Office begins the onboarding process with Human Resources.
Hiring full-time faculty follows a different process which is outlined in the SHSP Faculty Handbook.
