Housing & Residential Life
Living on campus can shorten your commute to classes and enrich your academic experience. It is the belief of the Office of Student and Residential Life that how you perform as an NYMC student has a lot to do with where and how you live. We strive to provide safe, welcoming, and affordable housing options that encourage and support your academic and personal success. The Office of Student and Residential Life provides a range of housing options for full-time, matriculated medical and graduate students. We are available to address any housing issues at any time—whether school is in session or not.
Housing Options
All students who are enrolled full-time at New York Medical College are eligible to live in our on-campus student housing, which we call Grasslands I and Grasslands II. Learn more about the housing options that NYMC offers.
Grasslands I
Grasslands I are garden-style unfurnished units.
Grasslands II
Grasslands II are furnished suite-style apartments with comprehensive amenities.
Applying to Live on Campus
All applications are for the year. Short-term housing is not available at this time. Students are permitted to sublet to other NYMC students.
Eligibility
All students who are enrolled full-time at New York Medical College are eligible to live in Student Housing. Housing is not guaranteed, and we have a certain number of bed spaces allocated to each program. Married students may request housing for themselves and their dependent or spouse. Copies of marriage certificates will be asked for submission of the housing application.
Application Process
Prior to the academic year, all new and current students must complete the Housing Agreement Form and the Rental/Property Insurance. You will receive an email with instructions on how to submit the application through the portal. All email communication is to your NYMC or Touro Email address. If you do not receive info or have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to housing@nymc.edu.
All incoming students are responsible for housing fees (found on the room selection and retention page). Applications will not be processed until the fees have been paid. Placements are made based on availability at the time of assignment for the program. Student housing applicants are not guaranteed their first preference.
Below you will find program-specific information (subject to change yearly), including when to apply. Applications are processed in the order of the date they are received. You should submit your application as early as possible. Applications will not be processed without the application fee and deposit. We accept credit card payments through our secure online portal.
School of Medicine (SOM) students will receive a housing application form and information from the Office of Admissions via email no later than late-May. SOM student housing is on a first-come, first-served basis. Housing assignments and other pertinent information regarding the move-in procedures will be sent via email in mid-July. First-year medical students typically move in the Thursday before orientation. We will send out your specific day and time with your housing agreements and assignments via your student email.
Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) students housing is on a first-come, first-served basis. D.P.T. students will receive their housing assignments and other pertinent information regarding the move-in procedures via email in early May. We will send out your specific day and time with your housing agreements and assignments via your student email.
Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) students will receive housing assignments along with other important information regarding the move-in process in August. First-year students typically move in the Friday before the start of your orientation. We will send out your specific day and time with your housing agreements and assignments via your student email.
Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) students are not guaranteed housing and will be placed on a waiting list in the event that a space becomes available. Assignments are made based on availability, usually in August. Student housing applicants are not guaranteed their first preference. First-year students typically move in the Friday before the start of your orientation. We will send out your specific day and time with your housing agreements and assignments via your student email.
Accelerated Biomedical Science students will receive a housing application form and information from the Admissions Office via email no later than mid-May. Assignments are given in July. First-year students typically move in the Friday before the start of your orientation. We will send out your specific day and time with your housing agreements and assignments via your student email.
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBMS) M.S. and Ph.D. The GSBMS program has a limited number of on-campus spaces, and all assignments must be approved by the administration for this program. Students approved for housing will receive their housing assignments and other pertinent information regarding the move-in procedures via e-mail in July. Move-in for M.S. and Ph.D. students typically takes place the Friday before the start of your orientation. Specific times and days will be communicated to all students via email.
Your Move to NYMC
All kitchens are equipped with appliances, including a microwave. Shower curtains are also included. Units do not have central air, so please see information regarding A/C units! Please coordinate with suitemates to avoid duplicate items/clutter. You might need more or less items depending on if you are going to be living in furnished (Grasslands 2) or unfurnished (Grasslands 1) housing.
The Packing Checklist can be used as a cheat sheet on what to bring. If you're looking to order in advance and have items delivered, NYMC will not accept packages or mail for students who have not yet formally checked into their apartment. If you would like to ship mail or packages to your apartment before your arrival, you must ensure that you will be moved in by the time it arrives or it will be returned to sender.
Amenities
The amenities for on-campus residential students at NYMC include mail services, laundry facilities, the Nicholas and Liberta Testa Fitness Center, an on-site superintendent who oversees housing maintenance, a community garden, BBQ/picnic areas, security, and a children's playground.
On-campus residential students can receive mail. The mailing address will be your apartment number in campus housing. There is no need to include “New York Medical College” or “Grasslands Housing” in the address.

Laundry
There are two laundry rooms located on campus, available to students living on campus only. The Grasslands I laundry room is located adjacent to the superintendent’s office (apt 511). You will need your student ID to access the laundry area. There is also a laundry room located in the Student Center Building.
Nicholas and Liberta Testa Fitness Center
Centrally located in the residence hall complex is the Student Center Building, the center consists of two rooms. One containing the cardiovascular equipment (Stairmasters, treadmills, and stationary bicycles) and the other with weight-training equipment (Nautilus and Universal machines, punching bag, and free weights). Only housing students and occupants of Grasslands residential halls may use the center. Although the center is open 24-hours a day, the doors are locked at all times and housing students may gain access to the fitness center using their NYMC ID card.
Many students gather for informal sports competitions in the field behind the Alumni Center.
Additional athletic facilities include local town recreation programs. The town of Pocantico Hills has outdoor tennis courts and a community pool that are available to NYMC Valhalla housing students.
On-Site Superintendent
The on-site super is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the housing buildings on the Valhalla Campus. He performs maintenance repairs and other facilities related tasks.
Community Garden
All are welcome to help care for the vegetables, herbs, and flowers growing at the end of Old Farm Road. The goal of our botanic and community garden, The Lisa Qian, M.D. '18, Memorial Garden, is to cultivate a place where students, staff, and faculty can share in the delights and pleasures of gardening. The first Botanic Garden, Orto Botanico di Podova, was created in 1545 to help medical students distinguish the differences between plants of therapeutic value and ‘imposters’. It is where Vesalius taught and Falloppio studied. We continue the tradition first established a half a century ago in our community garden.

Security
24-hour security is provided by officers of the Office of Public Safety, located in the Basic Sciences Building. View directions.
Children's Playground
In the late 1990s, Albert Wilner, M.D. '43, and his family donated funds to build a playground in student housing for NYMC students can enjoy with their children. View the Blanche and Albert Willner, M.D. '43, Playground location information.
