1. PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to determine courses which may be repeated in order to remediate a deficient grade in a course or to improve overall Grade Point Average (“GPA”) in the New York Medical College (“NYMC” or the “College”) School of Health Sciences and Practice (“SHSP”)

II. POLICY

Students in the SHSP may repeat certain courses to improve a grade in that course or if they have not passed a course.  Program specific circumstances, as specified in that program’s handbook, may dictate and exception to this policy.  In such a case, the Chair/Chief/Program Director and the Vice Dean will determine if that exception qualifies for the case at hand.

III. SCOPE

This policy applies to all programs in the SHSP.

IV. PROCEDURE

A. Students may repeat certain courses to improve a grade or if they have not passed a course. This is dependent on the individual department’s/division’s policy which may be found in the SHSP Policies, Regulations and Catalogues.

B. If a student repeats a course, then both courses and grades will remain on the student’s transcript; however, only the better of the two grades will be used to calculate the student’s GPA.

C. A student may repeat a specific course only once.

D. Faculty are encouraged to offer remediation in a course before issuing a final grade to allow students the opportunity to avoid needing to repeat the course.

E. If a course was taken outside of the time allowed for credit towards the particular degree and is, therefore, considered no longer current, then a student must retake the course as a substitute for the outdated course.

F. Students must confer with his/her advisor prior to repeating a course.

V. EFFECTIVE DATE

The policy is effective immediately
