I. PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines for New York Medical College School of Medicine (NYMC SOM) students to avail themselves of an Extended Study-Advanced Research (ESAR) path.
II. POLICY
It is the policy of the NYMC SOM to enable students to pursue an additional year to two of medical school to engage in a program of student that promotes a mentored scholarly research activity to supplement their medical curriculum learning experience and coursework.

This policy applies to all students in the NYMC SOM.

V. PROCEDURE
A. Eligibility
1. 5-year ESAR Eligibility
a. Student has not already extended the 4-year program time (excluding LOA time) due to academic difficulty, deceleration, remediation, and/or exceeded (or will exceed) 6 years of enrollment.
b. Student in Good Standing at NYMC SOM
c. Student has satisfactorily completed M3 requirements
d. Student with expressed interest in a competitive specialty, and requires more research experience
e. Student with a borderline application for a given competitive specialty (low step 1 score, low ranking, etc.) with expressed interest to enhance their residency application
f. Student with interest in a competitive specialty without a sponsored residency at NYMC/WMC
g. Applied to residency, did not successfully match, and wants to delay graduation
2. 6-year ESAR Eligibility
a. Student has satisfactorily completed one ESAR year
b. Student has not already extended the 4-year program time (excluding LOA time) due to academic difficulty, deceleration, remediation, and/or exceeded (or will exceed) 6 years of enrollment.
c. Student in Good Standing at NYMC SOM
d. Student has satisfactorily completed M3 requirements
e. Student with expressed interest in a competitive specialty, and requires more research experience
f. Student with a borderline application for a given competitive specialty (low step 1 score, low ranking, etc.) with expressed interest to enhance their residency application
g. Student with interest in a competitive specialty without a sponsored residency at NYMC/WMC
h. Applied to residency, did not successfully match, and wants to delay graduation
B. Enrollment Procedures
1. Minimum students per class: N/A
2. Maximum students per class: N/A
3. Enrollment begins: Between M3 and M4 or after Match
4. Expression of interest in Advanced Research
C. All students who plan to pursue this path must first confer with their Career Specialty Advisor who must submit a letter of support for the student’s pursuit of the ESAR program to the Office of Student Affairs. The student must then confer with the Dean of Students and the Associate Dean/Director of Financial Planning prior to submitting the ESAR Status Change form. The LOA/Readmission Committee must also review/approve all extended study requests.
D. It is the responsibility of the student to discuss this option with all appropriate Student Service Offices.
E. Once approved, OSA will review the ESAR Status Change form, attach required documents and forward to the Registrar’s Office for processing.
F. OSA will enter exceptions into the degree auditing system to indicate that the student has additional requirements (20 or 40 extra credits) for the degree.
G. Registrar will enroll the student in courses noted on the form & change the student’s expected graduation date in the SIS.
1. 5-year ESAR enrolled in RSRM 5102 Advanced Research.
2. 6-year ESAR enrolled in RSRM 5102E Advanced Research
3. Course titles will be changed on the section level to reflect the specific research that the student is doing.
H. Registrar will flag ESAR students in SIS for reporting purposes
I. Registrar will update expected graduation date in AAMC SRS
J. Registrar will notify appropriate faculty & staff
K. Degree Requirements: Students in the 5-year ESAR path will be required to complete 20 extra credits of research above the total 4-year required amount. Students in the 6-year ESAR path will be required to complete 40 extra credits of research above the total 4-year required amount.
VI. EFFECTIVE DATE
This policy shall be effective immediately.
