Race For Rehab
The Race for Rehab 5K is a student-run community event held each October on the NYMC campus. Hosted by Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) students from the School of Health Sciences and Practice since 1999, this festive event supports Achilles International, a not-for-profit organization that empowers athletes with disabilities by using sports for hope, inspiration, and achievement. The Race for Rehab 5K brings together Achilles International members, including runners with disabilities and hand cyclists, to participate alongside the Westchester and NYMC communities.
Leading up to the race, there are drawings, company and individual sponsorships, apparel and food sales, restaurant nights, social media donations, and a general donation collection to raise money for the charity. All donations and profits benefit Achilles International alone.
What is Achilles International?
Achilles International is a non-profit organization that provides a supportive community for athletes with disabilities across the United States and beyond. Founded by Dick Traum, the first person with an amputation to run the New York City Marathon, Achilles International has since grown to include 65 chapters in the U.S. and 70 chapters abroad. In the last 40 years, the organization has offered wounded war veterans and athletes with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, paraplegia, multiple sclerosis, cancer, and traumatic brain injuries, to participate in sports related activities. Achilles has empowered over 150,000 athletes to participate in endurance events globally. While running is a primary focus, the goal is to bring hope, inspiration, and the joy of achievement to every participant, differently abled and able-bodied alike.
Registration & Participation
Individuals can register online to participate in the race. Pricing is available on the registration page. You can sign up solo or with an assigned group. While called a race, there’s no need to run the race and we encourage you to move at the speed that is most comfortable for you. All assistive devices are welcome. For athletes using arm bikes, we have different start times.
We welcome all furry friends and have a designated dog watcher during the race.
