Dermatopathology

One unique aspect of the NYMC Dermatology Residency Program is the extensive training in dermatopathology. Formal weekly didactic sessions given by staff dermatopathologists focus on recognizing histologic patterns of inflammatory skin disease and neoplasms with special emphasis on developing clinical differential diagnoses. Each week, the dermatopathologist reads the biopsy specimens collected from the dermatology clinic alongside the residents. During this session, the clinical presentation of the patient is correlated with the histopathology of the biopsy specimen, allowing strong clinicopathologic correlation to be established. Residents learn to integrate the clinical and pathological aspects of patient presentations.

Procedural Dermatology

Residents receive an exceptional, hands-on experience in every aspect of dermatologic surgery. Under the leadership of co-directors Marc Handler, M.D., and Hamza Bhatti, D.O., our division offers a variety of surgical clinics and a high number of cases, including specialized Mohs micrographic surgery.

Throughout the year, the Department has access to various lasers through a contacted laser program in which diverse patients can be treated. The Department serves a multitude of patient populations with much experience in general dermatologic surgery, Mohs micrographic surgery, cosmetic surgery, and laser procedures.
