Chair's Message
Originally founded in 1875 as the Homeopathic Hospital by the New York City Department of Public Charities, New York City Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan has for the past century and a half served a historic mission of caring for the East Harlem community and beyond in New York City. Since its founding Metropolitan has been affiliated with New York Medical College, a relationship that continues to grow and represents the oldest partnership between a hospital and a private medical school in United States history. Through this strong partnership Metropolitan, in addition to its steadfast commitment to serving its community, has been dedicated to educating and training physicians who will serve others with expertise, compassion, and equity throughout their careers.
Our highly diverse patient population provides residents with exceptionally broad clinical exposure and a training experience that prepares them for any career path from community practice to academic medicine. Our commitment to quality is reflected in our receiving national recognition for our care in areas including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and others. We continuously innovate and seek ways to grow. Last year we began a new Endocrinology Fellowship Program and have others under development. We are in an ideal setting in which to train residents in health equity and how to combat health disparities. The Department of Medicine has a Health Equity Committee which includes a residency curriculum, a lecture series by nationally recognized speakers, community education and screening activities, grant-funded research, and performance improvement projects among others, all of which our residents actively participate in. We are passionate about improving the health of our community and have growing programs for lung cancer screening, smoking cessation, colon cancer screening, hepatitis C treatment, weight management, and many others led by our dedicated faculty.
Diversity and inclusion are central to our identity. We were recognized by the Lown Institute as the most racially inclusive hospital in the United States out of 3,600 hospitals surveyed. We have a highly diverse group of residents as well. We attract residents from the United States and from all over the world and we take pride in our friendly, inclusive, and supportive environment creating a second home for everyone to harmoniously work and thrive in.
On a personal note, my own medical education, residency, and fellowship training were based at NYC Health + Hospitals institutions. In these settings I not only received superb education and training but it is where I met mentors who profoundly impacted me and transformed my career. These experiences instilled in me a lifelong dedication to education, training, and mentoring and it is therefore not surprising that our program takes mentoring and career development seriously. In addition to preparing you for your career, we believe that mentoring should extend well beyond a training program’s duration and hence we are here to support you in future steps in your career, even long after you have graduated.
We encourage you to explore our program pages and look forward to meeting you.
