Research

As a urogynecologist with a background in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Malacarne Pape has a distinct appreciation of the complexities of diagnosing and treating pelvic floor disorders and seeks to uncover potential benefits of alternative therapies for the subset of patients with varying pelvic floor disorders.

She has been involved in many research projects, including best practices research, epidemiologic outcomes research, as well as randomized controlled trials. She was the recipient of a SUFU research grant, for which she designed and executed a randomized controlled trial looking at the efficacy of Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation (PTNS) for bladder pain syndrome patients. She is a regular contributor to female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery literature through her clinical research. While at NYU, she was the principal investigator for an industry-sponsored trial using a vaginal insert for the prevention of stress urinary incontinence in women and also contributed to many other publications.

While at New York Medical College, she has executed various qualitative projects and mentored medical students, residents, and faculty on the subject of qualitative research methodology. She has also worked with medical students to implement a maternal mortality
toolkit into the standard medical student curriculum to both educate future healthcare providers about the maternal mortality crisis and highlight various inequities and areas for improvement in the healthcare system. This will simultaneously be a product of educational research, looking at how the implementation of this program affects perceived practice by medical students.
