Carrie R. Muh, M.D. is chief of pediatric neurosurgery at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and surgical director of the Pediatric Epilepsy Program at Westchester Medical Center. In 2020, Dr. Muh co-founded the Epilepsy Center at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, which has achieved the highest level of accreditation from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) every year since 2021. She is a nationally recognized leader in pediatric and young adult epilepsy surgery and treats children with complex neurological conditions, including brain and spinal cord tumors, craniofacial and congenital neurosurgical disorders, cerebrovascular anomalies, peripheral nerve conditions, and functional and stereotactic neurosurgery.
Dr. Muh was recruited in 2019 from Duke University to lead and expand pediatric neurosurgical services and to build a surgical epilepsy center at Westchester Medical Center and Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital. Under her leadership, the Pediatric Neurosurgery Program has grown to include multiple board-certified pediatric neurosurgeons who provide full-spectrum, multidisciplinary care across numerous specialized clinics.
Dr. Muh’s academic and research interests include epilepsy, hydrocephalus, neuromodulation, and the clinical translation of innovative neurosurgical technologies for pediatric patients.
She is an inventor of a patented cerebrospinal fluid shunt and actively participates in clinical trials focused on improving therapeutic outcomes for children. She has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and invited reviews, and has served on the Executive Committee of the AANS/CNS Pediatric Neurosurgery Section. She is also an associate editor and reviewer for multiple neurosurgical and pediatric journals.
In addition to her academic and clinical leadership, Dr. Muh is engaged in international teaching and global health initiatives aimed at expanding access to pediatric neurosurgical and epilepsy care worldwide. She has most recently operated in Ukraine and Kenya, and has worked to develop an optional Global Neurosurgery rotation for residents at Westchester Medical Center. Her professional honors include the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital Physician Exemplar Award, a Pediatric Leadership Certificate from Harvard Medical School, designation as a Duke Health Fellow, Crain’s Notable Healthcare Leaders, Castle Connolly Top Doctor for multiple consecutive years, and finalist recognition for the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Innovator of the Year.
