Amir Steinberg, M.D., is the director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at the Westchester Medical Center (WMC). Dr. Steinberg has been involved in research focused on lymphoma, quality of care, and nonmalignant transplantation. His clinical focus is on hematologic malignancies and cellular therapy. He joined WMC in 2021 as clinical director for adult cellular therapy.
During his career, Dr. Steinberg has served as the principal investigator (PI) for a study investigating a conditioning regimen called DRBEAT for primary central nervous system lymphoma and was site PI for the multicenter ABVD vs AVD with brentuximab study for advanced-stage Hodgkin lymphoma. He served as PI for transplant studies in Crohn's disease and site PI for transplant studies for sickle cell anemia and multiple sclerosis. Dr. Steinberg has experience with bloodless transplantation for Jehovah’s Witness patients and has published a protocol on this approach. Dr. Steinberg has been actively involved in the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) and is Chair of FACT’s Performance Improvement Committee.
As a high-school senior, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, and his experiences and the care he received inspired him to pursue a career in oncology to give back and to treat others as he was treated.
Education of students, residents, fellows, nurses, and colleagues has been an instrumental component of Dr. Steinberg's career. At WMC/NYMC, he has been involved in many aspects of education. Dr. Steinberg, including working with the fellows on maximizing their learning experience by having the opportunity to supervise fellows, residents, and students in the clinic, and when he has been on service. Dr. Steinberg has contributed dozens of formal lectures to nurses, students, and fellows on topics in the field of hematologic malignancies since joining WMC/NYMC. He has most enjoyed mentoring students and trainees one-on-one through projects and papers.
He previously worked at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and was an assistant professor at UCLA before joining Mount Sinai Hospital's stem cell transplant program in 2011, rising to associate professor. During his 10 years at Mount Sinai, Dr. Steinberg served as the director of quality for the transplant program and transplant unit director.
