Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) at New York Medical College is dedicated to educational excellence in comprehensive obstetrics and gynecology and across women’s healthcare. We provide extensive clinical experiences in general obstetrics and gynecology as well as subspecialty services such as gynecologic oncology, urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery, maternal-fetal medicine, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and pelvic pain, complex family planning, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Incorporating the latest technologies including advances in minimally invasive techniques including robotic surgery and state-of-the-art technology across the Department, medical students and residents are taught to provide customized comprehensive and compassionate treatment options for women, from prenatal care and routine gynecologic exams to advanced oncologic and infertility treatments and beyond.

Our core mission is to have a comprehensive integrated approach based on a rights-based approach to health equity in reducing healthcare disparities in women with a focus on maternal morbidity and mortality.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

One of the core missions of the Department is to be an active protagonist in reducing the burden of health disparities affecting minority communities with emphasis on the African American and Hispanic populations—with the belief that it is through action that we will change the course of this scourge on our system and be part of the change we want to see in our communities.

We have been leaders in the dialogue, discussion, and action on identifying social determinants of health and working to reduce healthcare disparities in OB/GYN and have partnered with community organizations to improve the healthcare system. We are intentional in our focus towards creating a better future for women by training residents through a lens of anti-racism, inclusivity, and community engagement.

The Department values diversity, equity, and inclusion and is committed to eliminating health and healthcare disparities in OBGYN. Towards this end, the Department has established a commission with joint membership including faculty, administration, medical students, and residents to implement and sustain diversity efforts. The educational curriculum aims to train medical students, residents, and faculty to provide culturally competent, equitable, accessible, and high-quality care to all women.

Our faculty are diverse, experienced, and deeply committed, with experience and training from all major academic centers in the country. The faculty and staff have worked hard to create a culture of psychological safety and inquiry within the Department. Using state-of-the-art technology for clinical care and education has helped us continue to keep up with advances in medical education and training.

Medical Student Education

Faculty in OBGYN teach during the preclinical years as part of the foundational courses. During the Department’s third-year OBGYN Clerkship, medical students are exposed to a full range of women’s healthcare issues—spending the six weeks with equal time in both obstetrics and gynecology in hospital and outpatient settings.

The Department also offers several electives that allow third and fourth-year students to gain further knowledge of sub-specialties in the field, including gynecological oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, urogynecology, and minimally invasive gynecological surgery. Medical students interested in a career in OBGYN also have the opportunity to learn more during a sub-internship, which exposes them to the unique experience of an OBGYN intern, including rounding on patients daily, presenting on team rounds, and performing procedures as appropriate.

We offer unique and comprehensive clinical experience both within New York City, Westchester County, and throughout the Hudson Valley Region.

Simulation Training Program

Our Simulation Training Program is a comprehensive, hands-on curriculum, aimed at teaching the fundamentals of OBGYN. Our curriculum consists of a four-year rotating schedule of simulation sessions throughout the academic year including both Obstetric simulations and Gynecologic simulations. Our program is constantly evolving to ensure a curriculum that will allow us to grow and improve as physicians.

Research

Faculty work closely with students and residents in research mentorship and career guidance, building professional relationships that last well beyond their medical education. Multiple members of our faculty have completed the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Surgical Education Scholars Program, and we continue to provide faculty development opportunities to continue to educate our faculty to be physician educators. Additionally, we have faculty who are American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology board examiners and faculty who are nationally recognized for their research and NIH-funded.

When it comes to research, students will learn:

  • How to ask research questions that are relevant to their practice
  • How to critically appraise the scientific literature
  • How to design rigorous and ethical research projects and obtain necessary ethical and regulatory approvals to conduct their projects
  • How to collect and analyze data with the assistance of experts
  • How to collaborate with others including across disciplines – e.g. faculty mentors, medical students, and biostatisticians
  • How to disseminate their findings in both oral and written format

A research curriculum encompasses:

  • Introduction to research and developing research ideas
  • Presenting your work: abstract and PowerPoint
  • Important concepts in biostatistics: hypotheses, sample size calculations, statistical tests
  • Planning your research project: from concept note to IRB approval
  • Designing and conducting a qualitative research study
  • Survey design

Students have the opportunity to do a summer research fellowship but can also join research projects at any time in their medical education journey. Students are paired with faculty mentors who are subject-matter experts in their area of interest. Faculty members are available to mentor residents in the areas of:

  • Maternal-Fetal Medicine
  • Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery
  • Complex Family Planning
  • Minimally Invasive Gynecology and Robotic Surgery
  • Reproductive Genetics
  • LGBTQI Health
  • Global Health
  • Healthcare Equity
  • Obstetric Anesthesia
  • Medical Education

Statistical support is available within the Department and at New York Medical College. Funding is available to present scholarly work at national conferences.
