Urology

The medical and surgical specialty of urology focuses on the urinary tracts of males and females and the male reproductive system. Urologists are trained to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with urological disorders.

The mission of the Department of Urology at New York Medical College and its major clinical affiliate Westchester Medical Center is to provide and nurture the highest quality education, cutting-edge research, and state-of-the-art patient care. This is accomplished through an outstanding, dedicated, experienced, and well-trained faculty who enthusiastically embrace the ideal of educating and training the future generation of urologists and who provide sub-specialized care in all domains of urology, including general and pediatric urology, endourology/stone disease, urologic cancer, minimally invasive/robotic urology, incontinence, infertility, sexual dysfunction, reconstructive urology, female urology, and neuro-urology.

Research

The Department is strongly committed to clinical and basic urologic research. Faculty have published extensively on a range of topics in prestigious journals and frequently present their findings in regional, national, and international meetings and conferences, often in collaboration with medical students. The Urology Research Laboratory was officially established in 1996 with the commitment of the late Camille Mallouh, M.D., former chair and emeritus professor.

Medical Student Education

Faculty in the Department of Urology teach during the preclinical years as part of the foundational courses. The Department welcomes first- and second-year students for formal shadowing.

To further explore the field, third-year and fourth-year students may opt to take electives in urology, during which they work as part of the clinical team alongside attending physicians, residents, and fellows, participating in rounds, scrubbing into operating room cases, and seeing patients on the floor and in the emergency room.
